Scripture Union Daily Guide 19th April 2026 Outline
Read Jeremiah 44:15-19 again and observe how defiant and daring the Jews in Egypt were in their response to God’s warnings. Instead of repenting, they had the effrontery to blame God for their predicament, foolishly ascribed their blessings to idols, and determined to continue in their harlotry and idolatry. Why would sinners, suffering severe consequences of their sins, refuse to repent? Do we also behave like this? See Ephesians 2:12-13 and Ephesians 4:17-20 to understand why. We see increasing return to idolatry, especially among the younger generation. Though destructive, sin is often pleasurable and keeps the sinner from realizing his true condition.
Also, note that the women had the backing of their husbands in all their evil practices. Do we also secretly admire and approve of the evils, and immoral behaviours of our time (Romans 1:32)? The Jews were in Egypt as fugitives because of past sins (Jeremiah 44:20-23), and they would not escape the punishment for their effrontery and insulting response to God as well (Jeremiah 44:24-27). Like the Jews in Egypt, we may choose to be defiant to God’s word, but we cannot escape the consequences of our defiance (Jeremiah 44:28). What can we learn from Jeremiah 44:29-30?
And So
It is God’s word that will ultimately prevail, not man’s word.
